BEYOND
CANCUN, MEXICO'S RIVIERA MAYA
Combining
the tranquility of uncrowded beaches, a vast network of underground
rivers, over 100 deep pools of clear, calm water, the action of
eco-adventure sports, proximity to many of Mexico's most significant
Mayan archeological sites and the varied activities of the eco-archeological
parks, the Riviera Maya offers endless possibilities for exploration
and relaxation.
Beginning
18 miles south of the Cancun International Airport, the Riviera
Maya beckons vacationers looking for a new vacation experience.
This region was once an important commercial and religious center
for the ancient Maya. Tulum, the Maya fortress perched on cliffs
above the Caribbean Sea, is one of the most impressive ruins in
Mexico. Further inland is Coba, sitting in almost 50 square miles
of thick jungle. Eco parks such as Xcaret and Xel-Ha can also
be found here. Guests here can go snorkeling, diving and swimming
within the ecosystems in underground rivers, caves and fascinating
bay areas where fresh water meets the salt waters of the sea.
Two
main highways run through the Riviera Maya; one parallels the
coast to Tulum and then turns inland, the other runs from Tulum
to Coba. Along the coastal highway, there are roads that turn
towards the beach or into the jungle. Transportation between towns
and beaches is easy -- buses run regularly from Cancun to Tulum,
stopping at points of interest on the way. There are bus terminals
in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and taxis and tours buses are plentiful.
Hotels and resorts offer something for every lifestyle and budget.
There are now over 22,000 hotel rooms in the area, primarily around
the cozy beach town of Playa del Carmen, which has become one
of Mexico's most attractive resort hubs.
Though
still relatively unknown in the United States, the Riviera Maya
is a 75-mile stretch of beaches, bays and inlets on the edge of
the Yucatan Peninsula south of Cancun. It is a destination whose
time has come.
